We are fully aware of the concerns regarding false advertising and deceptive marketing issues by some overlay vendors and the dangers that they may present. The goal of this survey about overlays is to gather IAAP members experience and opinions to help IAAP form a position statement and to ensure through advocacy, awareness, and education that IAAP members and persons with disabilities are protected against potential misrepresentations of the benefits and capabilities of those products.
Over the last three months IAAP has pro-actively been examining the concerns around false claims about overlays and widgets through a taskforce. The taskforce was launched in November 2021. Its charter is not to comment on any specific technology but to(1) explore how possible overlay false advertising could be harming the accessibility profession and people with disabilities(2) review IAAP Code of Conduct and Ethics statements regarding false marketing claims by members and(3) publish findings and any action steps taken.
“Overlay” is a broad term that describes many different tools, however, generally, the term is used to describe tools that seek to improve accessibility by modifying the code of a web page (typically with JavaScript) and usually come in the form of a toolbar, plugin, app, or widget, without making changes to the website’s source code.
Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey. If you would like to provide additional feedback or set up an appointment to speak with the IAAP team, please use our IAAP Feedback Form.
